He is young and multi-talented. He is Writer, IT professional, musician and performing artiste. He is also a supreme lyricist and story teller and his name is Gabiro Mtu Necessary and some even say he is a breath of fresh air in today’s music world.Award winning Hip Hop act Gabriel Washington better known by his stage name “Gabiro MTU Necessary was born in the city of Kisumu.
Gabiro the fourth of five siblings drew his earliest inspirations from the likes of Octopizzo, Sir Sina Peters, Khuli Chana, Juliani and a host of others.
He had his Secondary education at Chulaimbo Secondary School, Kisumu, after which he had a brief spell at Maseno University before he dropped out of College.
While in School Gabiro was always in touch with his music which spurred him to write his 1st song in 2013 titled Story. The song went on to bag him an award at the prestigious Tecno Vybez Awards that same year, the song “Story” went on to receive rave reviews.
He later got back to studio and released another single, “Naitwa Gabiro” in 2014. During this time, he met the talented producer, ‘Malique’ and together, they created a new direction for Gabiro’s music and released the hit single, Ujumbe.
On the same year of 2014 a number of collaborations were released by Gabiro and within few months of their release, the songs gained massive airplay on radio and also in clubs nationwide, the songs rose to the top and dominated the charts on a number of radio stations countrywide. As a result of the success of the singles and collaborations a household name came into being, Mtu Necessary.
He is steadily building a reputation for Kisumu’s best lyricist, and but also shares his personal struggles through his art. From working as a matatu tout to battling drug abuse, Gabiro’s ability to tell stories separates him from rap music ‘status quo’.
“Hip-hop inspired me to persevere. Persevere and self-educate myself. When I was going through it, the thing that held me down was an old computer at my uncle’s place that I stored thousands of downloaded beats. That’s why I’m so loyal to the cause and loyal to the culture. I feel like I owe it to Hip-hop to do the best I can” – Gabiro
While many rappers tell us their story, Gabiro possesses the ability to bring you into his world and show it you. Perhaps his most notable song, “Story”, is a story of stories that happen in real life but they are often ignored .
In dramatic fashion, this song discusses bullying, police shootings, drug abuse and political injustice. There are few artists that connect with such issues through their music.
He has since worked with renowned artists like Africa’s dancehall stars Ketchup of Pam Pam fame and Wyre with whom they did Ayawa Remix that elevated him to the African music and entertainment scene.
Gabiro has since toured Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Haiti where he met and worked with Haitian rap sensation Steve J Bryan on the Paka Lil Remix that has since seen him receive a lot of fan love from Haiti.
Recently, he got endorsed by Grammy Award winning trumpeter Owuor Arunga with whom they did a song that everyone is anticipating for its release.
To date Gabiro has performed and toured along several renowned artists including SautiSol during “Made In Kisumu”, as well as shows like “2jinyce Concert” which holds sentimental value to Gabiro being that he is a Kisumu City native.
His show that meant a lot was when he opened for Diamond Platnumz in 2016.
