Profile: Eddy Kenzo, from the streets to stardom

This is the intriguing story of a man who picked himself up from the streets, and by dint of hard work engineered a remarkable rise and is today rubbing shoulders with the crops of Africa’s finest artistes.
On his official website, Kenzo writes:

The street was my university where I learnt a lot during the street hustle and call it the university of understanding.”

Eddy Kenzo is arguable one of the best Singers in Uganda and in the continent by virtue of the caliber of his music.

Kenzo, whose real name is Edrisa Musuuza, is three times winner of artistes of the month polls by Continental Radio Station listeners. This is testimony of how he is gradually experiencing a meteoric rise in the music world beyond Africa.

Kenzo’s story has magical proportions because others would simply have given up on life bearing in mind the difficulties he faced in his infancy. He lost his mum when he was just four and found himself sleeping rough on the streets for thirteen years in Masaka, a town in the central region of Uganda.

The loss of his mum was devastating because she meant everything to him as he wasn’t in touch with his father or any family member from either side.

It was on the street that the talented artiste was beaten by the music bug.

In spite of the odds stacked against him, Eddy Kenzo somehow managed to complete high school and jumped straight into music where he started writing songs.

Kenzo has positioned himself as one of the best singers in Africa

His penchant for music led him to prominently feature in the popular song Yanimba by Mikie Wine in 2008.

Barely a decade in the music industry, Kenzo is already a prolific singer with dozens of scintillating songs. In 2010, Eddy Kenzo released Stamina which was met with critical acclaim and served as a theme song for the election campaign of President Yoweri Museveni in 2012. Another song, Ogenda Kunisa was also released in 2012, and a year later it was Kamunguluze.

However, it was actually the release of Sitya Loss in 2014 that went viral. It was a great sensation and announced Eddy to an international audience that averages 10,000 views per day. The song has garnered millions of views and has been shared by prominent celebrities like Ellen Degeneres, Puff Daddy, Akon, Ronaldinho, Tevin Cambell, Sanaa Lathan and so many more worldwide.

Another feather was added to this relentless singer in 2016 when he was designated Uganda Tourism Ambassador by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. On the day he was appointed, Kenzo had this to say:

“Today we embark on a new journey as I sign as the Uganda Tourism Ambassador. I shall work hand in hand with all tourism departments to promote our tourist attractions, and I’ll continue flying the Uganda flag so high with God’s grace and mercy. Thank you My Uganda. For God and my Country”.

The partnership came a few weeks after Eddy Kenzo handed over his international awards to the Uganda Museum, a move he said was aimed at motivating Uganda’s young generation to work hard and improve their talents for not only their good but for the country as a whole.

Recently, Eddy Kenzo teamed up with Tanzanian Wasafi Records star, Harmonize to release the visuals of his latest song titled Pull Up. The smashing song hit the airwaves about a couple of months ago. The video was shot by JahLive Films, and features the popular Triplets Ghetto Kids dancers, the B2C and a number of gorgeous vixens.
