Meet prolific Jamaican Reggae artiste Michael Dawkins

Music is certainly a mission for Virgo born Jamaican Reggae artiste Michael Dawkins whose single Baby I’m A Want You is still toping  the chart in many countries across the world. Dawkins has been in the music business since the 1980’s. He started out singing on sound systems in Jamaica where he turned down several request of being a DJ for sounds.

Prolific Michael Dawkins spent his early years in Duhaney Park, Jamaica and rocked community events and fundraisers; the foundation from which his musical crafts was honed.

As he blossomed into a talented Reggae singer, Michael’s confidence and repertoire grew as well. Drawing his inspiration from lovers’ rock, roots rock reggae and rhythm and blues, he was influenced by artistes such as Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley and Dennis Brown.

In 1982, he met Producer Barry Clark who taught him to write music, as he pursued his career as a singer instead of a DJ. By this time he was in the process of migrating to the USA. This, though, never deterred him as he used his versatility and musical prowess to continue his journey.

His first single Don’t Give Me The Crack which was released and recorded on the Ruff & Tuff label, entered the chart on 1190 WLIB in 1987; he had a series of singles after that, the title tracks Assassin & Thursday Night, a maxi singles, recorded on the Infinity label in 1991 also gained vast popularity. Thursday Night received extensive air play on Irie FM (Ocho Rios, Jamaica) which further gave him much publicity.

In 1994 Michael Dawkins recorded Wisdom on the Top Notch label, which became the theme song on WHCR FM (The Vinie B Showcase), New York and is still being played. The last release on the Top Notch label was a single Hold UP Ya Hand with a bonus track titled Come Have Some Fun released in 2001; it was well received worldwide on over 500 radio stations, entered the Top Pop 40 chart in Europe and topped many local charts and play lists.

He has shared the stage with some of reggae’s greats such as Shaggy, Ravon, Capleton, Little John, Shine Head, Lady G, Trevor Sparks, Tippa Lee, Rapper Roberts, Culture and Super Black among others. He has performed in places like, Amazura, Legend, Marcus Hall, Biltmore Ballroom, Starlight, Vip Hall, Vibez Sports Bar, Bourban Beach, also performed on a showcase for the NAACP.

Travelling to and from Jamaica, this recording artiste is reenergized; he is ready, as he aims to take the music to higher heights to impact the world in a positive way.
